Paul R. MacDonald
President, TriMac Automotive Advisory Group

Mr. Mac Donald was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1952. He graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1970 and attended King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.  He entered the Automobile business at his Grandfather’s Chevrolet Dealership in Detroit, Michigan in 1972.  He left his family store to purchase his own Chevrolet Dealership in Hays, Kansas in 1981.  Mr. Mac Donald has held Volkswagen, Porsche, Audi, Mazda and Chevrolet franchises.  Mr. Mac Donald sold his Chevrolet-Mazda Dealership in October of 1998 and is President of TriMac Automotive Advisory Group.   

     Mr. Mac Donald has served in his community as United Way Co-Chairman, Chairman of the Board of Directors of St. Anthony Hospital, Vice-President of the Chamber of Commerce, Chairman for the Auction for Christian Education, Board of Director for the Fort Hays State University Endowment, Chairman of the Economic Development Corporation of Ellis County Kansas and a member of the Strategic Planning Committee for the City of Hays.  

     He also has served diligently in the automotive business as well.  He was a member of the General Motors President’s Advisory Council, Member of the National Chevrolet Dealer Council, President of the Western Kansas Chevrolet Dealer Association, Member of the Board of the Chevy Team of Kansas, Member of the General Motors Auction Planning Committee, President of the Kansas Automobile Dealers Association, Chairman of the Kansas Automobile Dealers Workman Compensation Fund. 

     Mr. Mac Donald is the former NADA Director from the State of Kansas.  As a NADA Director, he was a Chairman of the Regulatory Affairs Committee as well as a member of the Membership Committee.  He served on the Small Dealer Task Force as well as the Information Technology Task Force.  Mr. Mac Donald was the first Chairman of the new NADA Information Technology Committee.  Mr. Mac Donald was the one of the author’s on the NADA Management Education Guides “Resolving the Year 2000 Problem” and “Contingency Planning for the Year 2000 Problem”.  Mr. Mac Donald has presented at multiple NADA workshops on technology and computer information.   Most recently, Mr. MacDonald was a member of the NADA Data Task Force reviewing the use of Dealer Data in the Automotive Industry today.

     Mr. Mac Donald’s notable awards have been:  “The Blue Chip Enterprise Award” Recipient (Nation’s Business and US Chamber), “The Employer of the Year” for the hiring of the handicapped (State of Kansas), Paul Harris Fellowship (Rotary International), “Optimist of the Year Award” (Two Time Recipient, Hays Optimist Club), TIME Magazine Quality Dealer Finalist (NADA and TIME Magazine). 

     Since leaving the retail automotive business, Mr. Mac Donald has consulted with such companies as EDS, NADA, Automotive News, Ward Business Magazine, as well as numerous Dealer’s and Dealerships through out the country.

In 1999, Mr. Mac Donald, along with two members of his family, Mike Mac Donald and Louise Mac Donald, formed a consulting group TriMac Automotive Advisory Group.  With over 100 years of automobile retail experience between them, TriMac Automotive can assist Dealers with every single phase of their operations, including technology.

In December of 2001, Paul, along with his brother Michael and his sister-in-law Louise MacDonald, purchased the assets of Bountiful Mazda from the Ford Motor Company Utah Auto Collection.  Paul, Mike and Louise own and operate Bountiful Mazda in Bountiful, Utah.  Mr. Mac Donald is an active member of its Management Team.  Mike and Louise MacDonald left TriMac Automotive Advisory to operate the new Mazda dealership.

In March of 2005, Mr. MacDonald, along with his family members, purchased the assets of Greg Kruger Lincoln Mercury and opened Bountiful Lincoln Mercury in Bountiful, Utah.  Bountiful Lincoln Mercury Suzuki was sold in 2007.

In August of 2010, Mr. MacDonald, along with his family members, purchased the assets of the bankrupt Legacy Mazda in Orem, Utah.  They opened the new Orem Mazda September 1, 2010 in Orem.  Mr. MacDonald is an active member of the Orem Mazda Management Team.

In 2019, Paul and his brother Michael, sold their interests in both Mazda Dealerships to Michael’s son MJ.

Mr. Mac Donald enjoys golfing, restoring old cars, computers, traveling and is a skilled Highland Bagpiper.  Paul is an active member of the Kansas City St. Andrews Pipes and Drums, Central Links Golf Association and is a USGA Advanced Rules Official. In 2020, after 39 years, Paul moved from Hays, Kansas to Lenexa, Kansas. Paul has four daughters and nine Grandchildren.
